After the exhibitions Intimate (2006) that dealt with intimacy in contemporary photography and Photographs (2007) which pointed out issues between photography as medium and physical reality, this year Vasja Nagy as guest curator at Obalne galerije Piran realises another thematic exhibition on photography.
Through numerous questions that arise at encounters with this, in modern times so omnipresent and popular medium we keep discovering new meanings that occur around it. In the Intimate exhibition mostly documentary photographs representing objects, spaces and people were shown, while Photographs presented photographs as autonomous art objects that seem to be more connected to painting and computer graphics than to classical world of photography. Main topic was reduction of the object of photography.
This year’s project is penetrating even further through photographic substance. Instead of just hanging pictures in a gallery space will explore space beyond the objects made of paper, celluloid or light, but still remains connected to photography and photographic mind.
For the exhibition, artists who express through photography, and theorists, with an interest in photography were invited to this exploration and the set-up together with the publication will show that a photograph is most present when there is no photograph.

Re:peat is a platform for new tendencies in culture and art based on the context of repeating. The repeating of the motif, image or sound in a loop is a principle as old as art itself, the only thing that is changing is the instrument of the artist. Re:peat is an interactive network for the artists who use a new media as tool for communication and creation. They are focused on that process and its metamorphosis in new aesthetic forms.

The exhibition Photographs is a continuation of dealing with key questions of contemporary photography in Obalne galerije Piran. After last year’s exhibition Intimate, which primarily revealed the authors’ intimate space through projections of its reality, objectivity of life in representation, this year’s exhibition is in some sense set on the opposite bank. Instead of seeking, weaving stories from reality, describing real life in its exceptionality and uniqueness, there is original, newly created reality, with no intention of telling any story absent in this space and time. Photographic techniques are essentially bound to referentiality in the material world, as are also the photographs in this exhibition. However, reality, the real world of external phenomena, occurs in them more as direct confrontation than in the form of photographic mirroring. In their underlying approach, the works retreat from representation of the photographed object and above all pose themselves as the final reality, the final stage and ultimate form of pure presence.
From some points of view, the works can be attached to various traditions from modernist formal abstraction to conceptualist practices which explorations of the media itself have opened. What gives these works authenticity is above all reinstating relations to contemporaneity and concepts of reality in it.
